The Kensington Board

How to make Kensington

If you want the rules for Kensington,go here.

A picture paints a thousand words and Dan Kelly has saved my bacon with this picture of the board design.

As you can see, the board consists of seven hexagons in three rows (2,3,2). It is a symmetrical pattern so you can draw it easily if you go step by step.

Try sketching a rough pattern first so you get the idea. When you make a good drawing, try to be accurate, so the parts join up properly.

Look at this little snippet. Follow the instructions below, draw this section, photocopy it wildly, paste it all together and make your own board.

Please do try, because I promise you, you will love this game when you get started.

If you don't have a photocopier, draw it by hand!!! OK, use your PC then.

Close Up
Draw a square, a good size is 2cms square. Draw an equilateral triangle, using the top line of the square as the bottom line of the triangle (for an equilateral triangle the sides are the same length, the same as the square eg. 2 cms each). Your shape should look like a little house.
The Start Of Your Board
The Second Step
Using the bottom line of the square, draw another equilateral triangle, pointing down.
On the bottom triangle, using the both sides, draw another two squares. This is the shape you can photocopy and use repeatedly to make up the whole board.
The Final Piece
Let's repeat those instructions again;
  • Draw a square, a good size is 2cms square.
  • Draw a triangle, using the top line of the square as the bottom line of the triangle (an equilateral triangle, ie the sides are the same length, 2 cms each).
  • Your shape should look like a little house.
  • Using the bottom line of the square, draw another triangle, pointing down.
  • On the bottom triangle, using the both sides, draw another two squares.
  • You now have three squares, joined by two triangles and you've made (almost) half a hexagon!
  • Use this shape again and again, building up the hexagons as you go. Put the triangles up against the squares and you should see the pattern emerge easily.
  • When you get round the outside, you don't need the whole shape of course.

Not the clearest instructions I admit, but you've got a brain so I have confidence in you.

So you should end up with 2 hexagons across the top, then three along the middle, then two along the bottom. In each hexagon, draw a slightly smaller hexagon. Leave the three middle hexagons clear or white, but colour the top two red and the bottom two blue.
